Selection

Choosing the right system and partner

“Oh, any ERP would do…”

In the Netherlands we have a hilarious soda commercial where a guy, in a bar, is asked what to drink. The guy says: “Oh, any soda will do”. Wrong answer!

What happens next is a series of every-day scenes. First the same guy is at the hairdresser: “Oh, any haircut will do” and his head is shaved, only on the top. Next he goes to the suit store: “Oh, any suit will do” and he walks away in a 18th century Versailles gala suit. Then the car dealer “Oh, any car would do” and he drivers away in a tuk-tuk like fish restaurant promotion vehicle with a huge prawn on top… Hilarious!

This “Oh, any …. would do” got a catchphrase in the Netherlands for any indifferent decision that did not end well.

In my experience, companies are never consciously indifferent to a new software system. Still, a lack of preparation increases the risk that strong arguments will disproportionately influence decisions, effectively resulting in unintended indifference.
With ERP selection, the essence is to know what will help you to achieve your goals before entering the market. Zero indifference, zero assumption, full control. Because just like in the commercial, if others decide for you, it will not end well.

Why ERP selection deserves full control
You don’t want to go through the selection and implementation process twice. So if you do it, make sure you do it well. Selecting a new ERP system is not technically difficult. Collect your requirements, research market (longlist), compare best parties (shortlist), secure a well-negotiated contract.
But it requires time, because making the right choice requires preparation, a structured plan, processing of learnings and well-considered decision making. ERP selection is not about finding a working solution. It is about finding the best possible solution for your organisation.

Start your selection
Entering the ERP market unprepared is the biggest risk. ERP vendors and partners are usually very good at explaining why their solution is great. And they are often right! Their solution is great. The real question is: Is it also great for your organisation, your processes and your future plans?
Without a clear understanding of:
– what you really need
– what you want to avoid
– and where your critical risks are
The most convincing salesperson will effectively decide your next ERP system for you.

Also, one of the most common mistakes organisations make is treating ERP selection as a single decision. In reality, you are selecting two critical components: The ERP software and the ERP partner. Both can independently be excellent or a dealbreaker. That is why these selections must be made separately.

How I support ERP selection
I help organisations take and keep control of the ERP selection process.
My support typically includes:
– defining real business requirements (not generic wish lists);
– identifying critical must-haves and dealbreakers;
– structuring and comparing software and partner options objectively;
– challenging sales narratives with practical reality;
– ensuring decisions can be explained and defended internally.

The result is a solid foundation for implementation success. I bring ERP Selection experience and a fully independent, non-vendor perspective. My focus is on helping you make a decision you won’t regret.
